Boosting Productivity with White Noise

by C. Sumner

What is white noise?

White noise gets its name from white light which includes all the colors of the spectrum. White noise includes indistinguishable sounds from the entire audible sound spectrum. With today's technology, white noise is specifically focused on the sound range of human speech.

First, let's consider the idea of adding noise to a work environment in order to improve the sound quality. Imagine a dark room, where someone is randomly blinking a flashlight. The light is obvious and very distracting. Now picture that the overhead lights in the room have been turned on. Although the flashlight is still blinking, it is hardly noticeable because it has been masked by background lights.

Sound can work the same way; distracting noises can be hidden by the adding general background sound. This can cover the distractions of conversations, street noises, and other intrusive sounds.

Does white noise really work?

Yes. The principles behind it may seem implausible, the application has helped many people improve concentration and productivity. This technology is used in many government offices, medical facilities and businesses because it has been proven extremely effective. White noise creates an environment with less distractions and greater privacy.

Why use white noise?

White noise helps cover invasive sounds. It can be used in numerous situations where you need to get away from the noises.

Less distraction at work - White noise will mask conversations and other noise in the work place, leaving you free to focus on your work. A sound masking system in the business space will benefit everyone in the office.

Improved privacy and confidentiality - In industries requiring greater confidentiality (such as hospitals, government offices, counseling, etc.), sound masking systems use white noise is designed to cover human speech so people who aren't in the conversation cannot hear the conversation.

Less interrupted sleep - White noise can help you sleep through street noise, or unfamiliar sounds while traveling, resulting in a better night's sleep.

Sound therapy for tinnitus - Sound machines have been successfully use to lower the discomfort of tinnitus, or 'ringing in your ears.'

White noise by not be for everyone, but many people have used sound masking to increase their productivity at work and decrease their interruptions at night. There are free white noise generators and portable sound machines that make it easy to try for yourself. The benefits are definitely worth it!
